SEE and Koenig & Bauer partner for connected digital packaging

Packaging solutions provider SEE (formerly Sealed Air) and Koenig & Bauer have partnered to develop digital printing technology, equipment and services, making the production of custom-printed packaging more accessible, faster and easier to use.

The partnership will see Koenig & Bauer’s RotaJET-series of digital printing presses feature SEE’s prismiq intellectual property, software and hardware.

By accelerating the digitalisation of printing platforms, both companies said they will drive the expansion of their portfolio of solutions.

The partnership will expand market opportunities for both companies and result in co-branded digital printing presses.

Launched last year, SEE’s prismiq solutions empower brand owners to increase speed to market with higher quality and more cost-effective designs.

According to SEE, these solutions also increase business performance, improve operational efficiency, and reach consumers through digital content connected to packaging.

SEE vice-president of global design solutions Joe Lambert said, “SEE’s prismiq technology enables a file to be converted to a data stream that can control digital print heads and deliver high-quality images onto our products. This is called the digital writing system.

“This proprietary prismiq technology includes hardware and software solutions that enable this file translation to occur at very high speeds with the flexibility to cover a wide range of complex images.”

According to Lambert, this technology delivers digitally printed materials with unique product IDs at scale by achieving high output, combining width and speed.

It includes the design, the ability to print unique materials digitally, and an integrated platform that houses value chain data, product information, and user experience serving as a one-stop shop for end-to-end connected packaging solutions.

Lambert added, “The partnership will move digital printing beyond ultra-short orders to orders of any size. This will help brand owners improve speed to market, reduce inventory levels, order limited packaging, and easily run regional and seasonal promotions at scale.

“Brands will be able to provide more personalisation to consumers as well as specific details about the products they buy, such as authentication and environmental and social impact.

“Via the packaging, consumers will be able to connect directly with brands to get more value from their spending.”

SEE president and CEO Ted Doheny said, “SEE is pleased to partner with Koenig & Bauer to enhance both of our digital transformations.

“SEE’s prismiq technology will help Koenig & Bauer convert its printing platforms from analogue to digital while Koenig & Bauer will help accelerate and improve the robustness and effectiveness of SEE’s digital solutions.”

Koenig & Bauer chief executive officer Dr Andreas Pleßke added, “We are proud to intensify our established partnership with SEE. It is a strong and effective catalyst for the further development of our digital printing strategy and digital product initiatives and enhances the strong position of our RotaJET-series of printers for further industrial success.

“To strengthen our broad product portfolio of presses and software solutions for the printing and packaging markets, we have relied on successful cooperation agreements for many years. This unique collaboration with SEE will enable us to create enormous potential for technological progress and business development for both partners.”
