Orora engineer celebrates 45 years in sustainable manufacturing

An engineer who has clocked up 45 years working at Orora’s Revesby NSW beverage can manufacturing plant says that the business’ commitment to innovation has been a big part of his longevity.

When German-born Horst Drechsler worked his first shift at the plant in 1979, it ran one single speed production line and the cans themselves were a lot heavier.

Today, the site runs mass conveyors with variable speeds and Orora is a world-leader in producing light-weight cans in multiple sizes. Drechsler is the company’s first engineer to have worked on every piece of new technology installed at the Revesby site.

Recently celebrated for his dedication and tenure, Drechsler said a culture built around continuous improvement is what makes Orora stand out.

“The team is prepared to work hard for results and that resonates with me. I’ve always appreciated Orora’s innovation – we try to stay ahead of trends in technology and try new things,” Drechsler said.

“People always want to drink something out of a can, and they always will. But we don’t rest on that. I have seen a lot of technology changes and amazing improvements which are all about making cans better for the customer and for the environment, and that’s a big part of the reason for why I’m still here.

“A lot of manufacturing in Australia has come and gone over my time, but I think what keeps Orora strong is its approach to innovation and trying new things.

“Years ago, I recall we tried aluminium bottles and other ideas have come and gone – while not all these things lasted at least they were tried and that is inspiring.”

Drechsler is adamant that hard work is the key to a successful career and overall wellbeing. He learned his trade skills in Germany but said the opportunity to develop skills in different engineering roles at Orora has kept him motivated.

“My advice to new young team members is always put in your best effort and Orora will support and reward you. This is a business that appreciates team members who are keen to apply themselves and learn,” he said.

“I’ve worked shift work for many years and while it’s challenging the business looks after me. That is one of the things that has kept me here.”

Orora Cans executive general manager Chris Smith said Drechsler’s loyalty and dedication wasn’t rare for the Revesby site or wider Cans team, however it was quite extraordinary by today’s standards.

“For 45 years, Horst has been an integral part of our team, which is amazing in itself. He has seen this business through many changes, always adapting and sharing his wisdom with his teammates,” Smith said.

“Horst is one of several team members at Revesby who have given more than 30 years of service, which I think is a great reflection of our culture and the working environment.

“We can’t thank Horst and his long serving colleagues enough for their contribution and dedication.”
